A pair of filter cartridges specifically dimensioned for espresso machines that feature a water tank filter port. Inside each cartridge, a compact bed of activated carbon works alongside a small resin component that targets calcium hardness. Because espresso extraction uses smaller volumes of water under high pressure, any off‑flavours or scale deposits can become particularly noticeable in the cup and on the machine’s internal parts. This cartridge is shaped to sit discreetly in the tank without occupying excessive volume, leaving ample space for the water reserve.

Addressing Taste and Scale
Chlorine, often present at low milligram‑per‑litre levels in treated mains water, can bond with coffee’s natural phenols during brewing and produce a faintly bitter or chemical aftertaste. The carbon component captures a substantial portion of that chlorine before the water enters the pump. Concurrently, the ion exchange resin swaps a fraction of calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or hydrogen ions, thereby lowering the tendency to form hard, white scale on the boiler, group head and solenoid valve. This dual action may assist in preserving the precision of the machine’s temperature control and extending the interval between professional descaling services.

Fitting the Cartridge
Installation is tool‑free. The dry cartridge is first submerged in clean water for five to ten minutes to saturate the media and eliminate fine carbon dust. Once hydrated, it is inserted into the designated filter holder inside the reservoir, typically pushed firmly until a seal seats against the base. After fitting, it is advisable to draw a full tank of water through the group head and steam wand without coffee to flush any residual particles from the internal pipework.

Replacement Schedule
The cartridge should be exchanged every eight to ten weeks under normal domestic duty, or after about 50 litres of water have passed through it, whichever point is reached first. In regions where the water supply is particularly hard, a replacement every six weeks may be more appropriate. The pack of two provides a straightforward way to keep a spare on the shelf, so a fresh unit is always available when the current one shows signs of exhaustion — most commonly a faint slick of scale on the tank wall or a subtle change in espresso clarity.

Storage and Precautions
Spare cartridges are best stored in their original sealed packaging away from humidity, heat and strong‑smelling substances such as cleaning agents. Once a cartridge is fitted, it should not be allowed to dry out; if a machine sits idle for a week or longer, it is prudent to discard the wet cartridge and start with a new one. These cartridges are intended exclusively for cold, potable municipal water and are not a substitute for water purification in situations where the source is of unknown quality.
